Dessert French Wine
The single factor that produces exceptional dessert French wine is that of “noble rot”, an infection of mold in the vines called botrytis cinerea.
As unappetizing as this sounds, it is this “noble rot” that has given the Sauternes district in the Bordeaux region of France its reputation.
The Sauternes district, and the wine it produces by the same name, is considered the best dessert wine producing region in the world. As you might guess, the price tag on this exclusive French wine matches its reputation, with half-bottles of the great Chateau d’Yquem fetching upwards of $150. However, it is a price well worth paying for an occasion that merits only the very best. Still, there are many excellent Sauternes available for considerably less money. Some lesser known French dessert wines include Quarts-de-Chaume from the Loire Valley and Selection des Grains Nobles from the Alsace region.
