Italian Dessert Wine
Italian Dessert Wine is more common than dessert wines from other countries, so you have several choices.
The Veneto region of
Italy
produces red dessert wines made from the dried grapes of Amarone blends and late harvest versions of Soave.
Tuscany offers Vin Santo. Amber in color and made from dried grapes, Vin Santo (holy wine) combines Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes and is typically very sweet. The Piedmont region of Italy gives us low alcohol content Brachetto d’Acqui, a red dessert wine produced in the provinces of Asti and Alessandria and blended with Aleatico and Moscato Nero grapes. Piedmont also yields the white, sweet dessert wine Moscato d’Asti, produced mainly in the districts of Asti and in smaller nearby regions of Alessandria and Cuneo. Moscato d'Asti, from the Moscato Bianco grape, is related to the well-known, sparkling wine Asti or Asti Spumante. A less common alternative is produced with the Aleatico grape grown then dried in the Apulia and Lazio region of Italy.
